Bulk Glass Reinforced Composite Columns: Physical Testing Results, Analysis, and Discussion

Glass-reinforced composite columns (GRCCs) may provide an economical alternative to conventional construction materials due the superior cost strength provided by bulk glass. Prior this study, no GRCCs had been physically tested, having previously relied on simulation predict behavior of columns. This study utilizes polyurethane resin bonds in place sizing agents for adherence between materials, a key requirement development structural system The unreinforced control column failed at load 11.2 kN while maximum GRCC was 30.8 kN. indicates that glass can be loaded 123 MPa before onset delamination failure GRCCs. Maximum shear stress 53 reached, exceeding 11 required practical Buckling occurred kN, below theoretical 64.4 Through gradual delamination, slowly transferred unbonded condition, causing buckling failure. Delamination is unlikely occur lower strengths.
